Topic: Crown Molding or Not?

We are decorating our formal dining room and formal living room. We have 8 foot ceilings in both rooms. I was told that you shouldn't put crown molding in a room with that height of celings because it makes the room look smaller? Is that true? Also if the rooms are connected should I do both rooms?
