Topic: Removing ceramic tile adhesive from wall

We are remodeling our kitchen and are removing a ceramic tile backsplash. For some reason, the previous owners of the house extended the backsplash beyond the cabinets and onto an adjacent wall. Although we are going to put in a new tile backsplash behind the cabinets, we want to have a smooth wall surface where this tile extension is now. The walls are solid plaster (smooth finish) and in excellent condition, but the tile adhesive is really stuck to the wall (the adhesive stayed on the wall instead of pulling off with the tiles). We obviously don't want to replace the entire wall, when the problem area is only about 12 inches by 18 inches. Is there a way to remove/sand off the adhesive so the area can be painted along with the rest of this wall? We want the end result to be a smooth surface. Thanks for your help.
