Topic: Help w/ replacing windows

I am looking for some advice. I want to replace my windows myself (budgetary reasons) and am fairly good at that sort of thing. The current windows are contractor grade aliuminum windows. There is no existing frame other than an aluminum channel the window slides in. It is attached to an aluminum blind stop on the outside. They are easy to get out, but my confusion is on ordering and installing replacement windows.
The outside of my house is vinyl siding on top and brick on the bottom. Replacing the windows in the brick should be fairly easy. But I don't want to remove the existing siding and "J" channel (on the second story of my house). All I have read about replacement windows says that you leave the existing wood frame and blind stop. I don't have any. So what do I do when replacing the windows? Do I need to remove the dry wall inside the house and go back to the original rough opening? Should I be ordering "replacement" or "new constuction" windows? I can't seem to get a clear answer from any of the hardware stores in my area. Any advice would be appreciated.
