Topic: Hard Joint Filler for Bricks on Sand
Author: Meg Bergen

Hi. I was wondering if you might have any suggestions for a problem I am having. I am a landscape architect and our company designed a brick swimming pool deck for a client of ours. The paving is laid on sand, not concrete, because we were trying to put in a deck that would be healthier for the plants. We used the product sandlock in between the bricks, because we were trying to keep the sand out of the pool, and the product claimed it would harden, keeping the sand from washing away. The client had problems ever since because the sand would soften when wet, and after a short while just seemed like regular sand again even when dry. We then tried the product surebond. That seemed to work for awhile, but then it also started to soften. Our client is afraid that she will have to take up the paving and re-lay it all on concrete and it may come to that eventually. In the meantime, can you think of any other products that might work that will harden in between the bricks and stay hard even when wet? We've thought of mortar but are not sure that we like the looks of that. The rest of the garden paving is also brick on sand, so we would prefer something that matches, but are willing to consider anything. I'm in St. Louis. Thanks. Meg
