Topic: help with stairs

Hi :)
We need some advice on our stairway. We live in a split level home that had a wrought(sp) iron railing around the living room and down the stairs to the foyer. We removed the railing and put an oak railing and it looks great.. Now our concern.. the stairs are carpeted and when we pulled the carpeting back the wood is sorta like a plywood type of stuff but thicker.. we can't stain that wood. We want hardwood stairs that we can stain to match the railing and get rid of the carpet. We have 3 small kids and we have recarpeted these stairs twice and its disgusting once again. We want to get rid of the carpet once and for all. However we were told that our stairs are a one piece unit ordered for the builder and not easily changed. My question is that if it is basically a one piece unit can we replace the treads and risers to oak without removing the entire stair unit? I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing.. I think its pretty standard in the split houses that the stairway comes as a one piece unit. You walk into a small foyer and there is a set of stairs going upstairs to the kitchen etc and another set going down to the family room..I would appreciate any advice/ideas that you might have. I can't be the only person to ever have this dilema :)
