You may want to think about having your wedding registry be a mortgage registry... the Department of Housing and Urban Development has a bunch of lenders that can do it... there's an article from TheKnot.com here too: http://www.theknot.com/ch_article.html?Object=AI980914213919
I see they even have a way you can have an online registry with them that goes toward an American Express gift certificate that goes toward a Quicken mortgage. No idea if that's a good or bad deal, though.
There are plenty of zero-down programs. My best advice is to thoroughly research like it sounds you are. Also, don't get in over your head... make sure you buy something that won't leave you strapped.
Lastly, don't feel pressured to buy a house. There are plenty of good reasons to rent though I think it's true that in the long run having your own place is unavoidable economic sense.
You can always consider a condo or townhouse, but those don't tend to appreciate as much as houses. Also, you should ALWAYS have a buffer of 'emergency money'... so I would hang onto that $5k if you can!
