Finish Carpentry - Quarter Round

I pulled the carpet out of my bedroom and now have to put new quarter round on the floor moulding. What's the best way to install it> Do I glue it in place first and then nail it? If not, do I start in the middle and work outward with the nails? How far apart should the nails be? Should I stain it first? HEEELLLP!
