Sue, the answer depends somewhat on your roof pitch and some other things. Im guessing you can add the space but interior bearing walls and support beams in the basment or crawl space below may need modified. The ceiling joist will need to be beefed up to support the new loads and you need to find room for a stair to the new second floor. The best idea is to contact a local architect familiar with residential design /remodeling. They can tell you the feasibility and give some rough ideas of costs to see if it makes sense for you.Expect to pay a small consultation fee for their time. They may also have some other suggestions you havent considered. Good Luck
