Subject: Re: Help w/ replacing windows

Well John the ultimate application would be to remove the siding and install new construction windows. The nailing fin adds a great water barrier. You can also order a replacement window to slide inside your existing frame. You may have to cut back any protruding channels or stops for a good fit. We just finished one here where we insert replacement windows inside aluminum framed windows. We had to remove the center mulls and screw on new stops. You can put the stops where ever you want to so things work out the best way. You can use pine stops and have the outside wrapped or vinyl stops to save the hassle. We have also cut the old frame out by insert a Sawzall blade between the J Channel and existing frame. We then cut the nailing fin and pop the old unit out. You can then order a window to slide back in the opening and butt the existing J Channel. You will screw the new window in place and caulk the gap between the J Channel and new frame. You can then use an adhesive foam around the inside gap to strengthen the application and prevent water leakage. This way will also require some inside trim work. You can order a Jamb Box or get your new window with Jamb extensions pre-applied. You then just have to nail the trim in place. Good Luck!
