Help! My house is 5 years old. I have noticed that water has leaked down the chimney onto the gas logs. The mantel has separated at the molding. The first time it happened, the contractor said the house was settling and he fixed the mantel. When I told him about the standing water puddle at the base of the fireplace, he said that it sometimes happens. I accepted the explanation that time because it was a hard, almost horizontal rain. By the way, I have a chimney cap. But, it happened again. The mantel is again separating and you can see water streaks on the marble. This rain was in no means horizontal. I have lived in brick houses all my life and have never had water come in the chimney. Oh, I might also add that I turned off the gas logs months ago after smelling an odor. I plan to have an inspector from the gas company come out before the winter months to check this out.
What is going on? Is this a serious problem? What can I do? Am I getting the run around because I am a woman?
Thanks,
Ell
