I hired a "friend of the family" to do work on my house...I know you've heard this scenario before. he needed money & appealed to my emotions so I paid him up front. after a series of negotiations & a written agreement (not a professional contract per se) he started the work & quit long before what he led me to believe he would do for the up front money. He came up with new contingencies & wanted more money a month into the project. We've been squabbling ever since. I threatened to take him to small claims court & offered him a compromise which was very clearly communicated as the minimum I would accept. so he came back & finished a small part of what he abandoned & did not satisfy the minimum. is small claims court next? what can I expect? we're through negotiating. no, he's not a licenced contractor. yes, I've learned a lesson. advice please.
