Topic: Basement Water Problem

we are in the process of having a basement dug- due to lots of rain the last 2 weeks my big hole now has about a foot of water in it. The basement contrator says that i need to have it pumped out or they will for a fee. Is this normal? I was under the impress that this would be something that they run into all the time. The only contact i signed was for the price of the basement.
