Expert Reply Don't jamb the studs under the beam. When the beam deflects that will load the studs and perhaps cause damage to the wall cladding as the studs move.
If you don't want to drill the beam because it is hard work, consider self-drilling, self-tapping screws. Visit the commercial screw store and tell them what you want to do.
Also, consider steel studs: You can nest two base channels with one screwed to the beam and one to the studs. The nesting will allow movement to occur without damage.
