First Steps of Building A Custom House
Your resource for understanding the different stages of custom home building process and finding a screened custom home builder.
Once the initial decision making process is completed, it is time to start the home building process, right? Not so fast,
first there is site work and lot preparation that need to be done. Lot preparation can be difficult if you do not
have a flat lot. Make sure you select someone with experience to prepare your lot for building a house. Often
times, you need to do an engineering study to determine water runoff patterns and how your custom built home can
be oriented on the lot.
After the lot has been prepared, the foundation is ready to be poured.
Your future custom home will rest upon the foundation, and whether it is concrete, steel, or wood; it definitely
needs to be strong and dependable. Building a house with a strong foundation is critical, as a house is only as
good as the foundation on which it rests. Trying to pinch pennies on the foundation would not be wise, as a bad
foundation could lead to thousands upon thousands of dollars in problems over time. Be sure to check into
investing in a waterproofing system, as you keep in mind the effects of Mother Nature's forces. For more
information on building a house foundation, discuss all options with your builder early on in the process.
Once the foundation has been laid, framing can begin. This can be a fun and exciting time, as the custom home
builders put up the skeleton of your new custom home, you can start to see your dream come true. Depending on how
involved you want to be with building a house, you can be onsite and make changes since it is easier to see
the layout of your new home in three-dimensions. The framing process can last anywhere from a week for a smaller
house, to months for a larger one. Your new custom home will really start to take shape at this point and you will
be able to walk through and get a better visual of what the finished product will be.
