A Guide to Southern Pine Flooring
By Roy Berendsohn
A guide to southern pine flooring is, obviously, a 17-page instructional booklet on how to install this type of flooring. But along the way, it delivers an education on lumber and the variety of things that you need to be aware of when pine is installed as flooring. In that respect, the guide is a double-header. In this day of synthetic products, people often forget that lumber has a different set of characteristics than man-made materials. If you want the floor to look right when it’s done, and if you want it to provide troublefree service, you’ve got to be aware of the inescapable fact that wood reacts in response to moisture.
The guidecompiled by the Southern Forest Products Assn. on behalf of the Southern Pine Councilprovides detailed grading, installation and finishing information that you would be hard pressed to find through other sources. You can order it for $2 (Publication No. SFPA #705/5M/5-00) from the Southern Forest Products Assn., P.O. Box 641700, Kenner, LA 70064; www.southernpine.com.
