5 Must-Have Items to Create the Ultimate Woman Cave

Woman caves, or mom caves, should not be taking a back seat to the more traditional man cave. Women, much like their male counterparts, need their own space to unwind and relax. Women are generally the ones making sure everyone is taken care of, but often times, they need space to take care of themselves. Hence, a woman cave is needed. Before you craft your own woman cave, make sure you include our five essential items all woman caves need.

According to New York designer Elaine Griffin, a mom cave is “a space where the woman that nurtures everyone can go to nurture herself.” We all need time away from the world. That right or privilege is not only intended for those with a Y chromosome. Just like a man cave, women should have as many personal touches as possible when designing their ultimate woman cave. Nonetheless, there are certain items every room in the house needs and a woman cave is no different. Here is our list of five essential items you need to create the ultimate woman cave.

1. Personal Items

Just as we outlined in our 10 essential items for man caves, women need to include personal items in their woman caves as well. This is your area to get away from it all, but you also need to make it unique and represent yourself. Highlight items that bring positive reinforcement. Whether it was a weekend DIY project you completed, a great photograph you took or maybe highlights of your favorite Pinterest board, you need to make sure your woman cave has that “YOU” touch. This is your area to shine a light on nobody but yourself. Take advantage of it by adding as many personal items to your woman cave as possible.

2. Space/Storage

It is no secret that all females want more space. Whether it is more closet space for your clothes, shelf space for your books or just space to unclutter other areas of the home, woman caves need storage. In fact, I even went around Chicago asking decorators what they would include and one said, “…most importantly, many, many, many shelves for shoes.” Peggy Pardo of Decorating Files says a woman cave is a space to relax and get away from it all. Therefore, don’t just create a woman cave for the sake of having one. I would not recommend putting a woman cave in a small corner of the closet. A woman cave is designed to be your home within your home. Therefore, you need the space to make sure you have included everything you need. Extra storage, hangers and drawers will not only make your unique woman cave spacious, but also give you the peace of mind that your woman cave has anything and everything you need.

Bonus Tip: To create extra storage space, you could convert a few coat hooks into a handy place to hang your favorite decorations.

3. Desk Space

As I am sure many of our female readers can attest to, woman like to do work or craft projects at home. The dining room table is not enough. Women need their own private area to complete extra work, respond to emails, sow or finish that craft project you have been working on for so long. The home office was never designed with a particular sex in mind. Women need their own office space as well. A woman cave is a perfect space for a large desk to complete all these tasks and more.

4. A Soothing Atmosphere

As I said earlier, I have been asking many designers and decorators what their take is on the woman cave. To no surprise, a key theme that kept coming up was the idea of soothing atmospheres. Unlike men, women do care about the aura that comes off in their woman or mom cave. In order to include this necessary item, all woman caves need to include scented candles. In addition, other recommended items that will undoubtedly bring soothing tensions to your woman cave include: a wine cellar, fireplace, exercise equipment, silk linens, rich textures and bright colors for the walls. Color is of course subjective, but we would recommend light blue, as it tends to ease stress.

5. Chaise Lounge or Nook with Plenty of Pillows

A terrific way to relieve stress and just escape to another world is by reading a Danielle Steel novel or for a lighter touch, all those magazines piling up on your dining room table. To fully appreciate the time you have to read, you need to be in the most comfortable setting possible and that means you need a chaise lounge or a large couch with plenty of pillows. For extreme comfort, make sure all furniture is made of natural fibers like cotton or silk. Also, if you plan on reading often in your brand new woman cave, make sure you have plenty of lighting.
