How Much Does It Cost To Install Gutters?

Gutters fortunately come with every home and unless you are building a new home from scratch, will be included in the sale price. However, over time, gutters start to wear and tear and eventually, will need to be fully replaced. That is where gutter installation comes into play.

The gutters and downspouts attached to your roof are two of the most important, and yet most frequently overlooked components your home’s exterior. Your gutters and downspouts protect the sides of your house from mud, preventing erosion, reducing water damage to the home's foundation and keeping guests dry when they enter or leave your home. Needless to say, they are vital, but how much will these necessary home elements cost?

Gutter Installation Cost

According to our gutter installation cost estimator, the average price to install gutters is $827. When budgeting overall costs to install gutters, it is important to first have your contractor (or you) map out lengths and the location of downspouts, so you know how much to purchase. Gutters are generally sold in prefabricated lengths of five, 10 or 15 feet. Downspouts come in various sizes as well. While most of the costs of gutter installation will come from labor, it is still important to assess all possible material costs ahead of time.

While we would always encourage our fans to try to install their own gutters, if you have high roofs, a roofing contractor will not only have better and safer equipment (compared to you or a handyman), but will also have more experience.

Types of Gutters

A majority of your gutter installation costs will come from labor, but a strong portion will be tied up in materials. Different materials can make a huge difference in your overall gutter installation cost. Below are the major types of gutters used across the U.S.

Aluminum: Aluminum gutters are among the best because they require no painting and do not crack or bend. They can be customized to fit any roof and come in a wide array of colors to match your roof or home’s siding. According to our aluminum gutter material estimator, the average cost per linear foot ranges from $4.13 to $5.47.

Vinyl: Vinyl gutters are the easiest and cheapest gutters to install (especially for DIYers). They are sold at all large home centers, are light and easy to put up. They usually come in brown or white. Although easy to install, they do not have the look or permanency of metal gutters and do not stand up against the elements as well as some of the other options. Fortunately, the low price outweighs some of the drawbacks. Many vinyl gutters come in at $3 to $5 for every 10 feet.

Seamless: These gutters come in one large piece. There are no breaks or seams in the gutters where water and debris can seep in and lead to deterioration. The only seams in seamless gutters are where the inside and outside corners come together. They are virtually maintenance free and can be customized to match your siding. As our seamless gutter material estimator dictates, their average minimum cost per project is $800, with the average maximum cost coming in at $5,000.

Copper: If you’re looking for the best, copper gutters are the way to go. Copper gutters are typically built to fit your home. They are beautiful, tough and can last over 60 years, minimizing your repair costs down the road. However, as you might expect, this premium doesn’t come without a price. Copper gutters cost between $15 and $25 per linear foot.

Wood: Although often found on old homes, wood gutters still present a custom design. They give a home that rustic touch, or continuity, and with proper care, can last a very long time. The average price of wood gutter installation is between $14 and $20 per linear foot.

Gutters and downspouts protect your home and foundation from disaster. If water is not property leaving your home and foundation, serious roof and flooding issues can arise. Given the $827 installation cost, it’s no wonder nearly every home in America has properly installed gutters.
