As I look out the window, the intense sunlight reminds me that we are in the middle of my favorite season: summer. I love summer. I adore summer. I have happily traded in my heavy winter wardrobe for sundresses, open-toed shoes and sunnies. Now that my wardrobe is summer ready, I am here to help you transition your home into a place that embraces relaxation and sunshine. You don’t have to replace all of your décor or furniture, just simply update your home with these simple tips and easy décor accents. Let’s get those breezy linens out and prep those party pitcher drink recipes – it’s time to settle in for summer.
Embrace the warm and breezy days of summer by removing those heavy curtains and replacing them with light & airy ones to truly let that sunshine in. Window treatments provide great visual interest whether you’re going for a dramatic, elegant or a casual look. And when you change them up, it’s definitely one of the first things people notice when they enter your home. Look for materials like soft cotton, linen or chiffon. They offer a luxurious look while keeping your home cool. Nothing says summer like some nautical stripes. These Sanaga Striped Curtains from Anthropologie offer a stunning mix of blue and teal that will really bring a coastal ambiance to your room. When installing, be sure to hang curtains high and wide. This will give the illusion of larger windows and will also allow more light to stream in when the curtains are open.
Nothing livens up a space like colorful accent pillows. Swap them out seasonally to completely change the look of your living room or bedroom without breaking the bank. Bring the ocean inside with these embroidered pillows from Pier 1. While the octopus happens to be my personal favorite, the collection also offers embroidered wave, seahorse, koi fish, starfish and coral options. Mix and match them for a true nautical look. These pillows are also UV-treated to make a perfect addition to your outdoor patio.
Just as pumpkins are abundant for fall, fresh flowers are a beautiful and affordable way to bring summer to life. Peonies, hydrangeas, daffodils or lavender are all excellent choices for summer. Vases are always nice, but try a Mason jar or galvanized tin pitcher for a more rustic look. Be sure that when you're shopping (or picking), you don't allow yourself to select flowers in full bloom. They won't last nearly as long once you get them home and won't stand up as well to transport and handling. You want to choose arrangements with blossoms that are beginning to open and buds that are showing some color.
Bring the beach and the perfect feeling of summer relaxation into your home year round with candles. Kringle Candles are an excellent option as their candles are all-white, making it a breeze to blend in to any décor. In addition, all-white candles emit the brightest light possible. The fresh and airy collection features crisp, clean scents that are perfect for any home to celebrate sweet summertime. No matter which scent or style you select, these candles are an ideal match for every setting in every room.
Summertime brings along warm weather so be sure to have cool drinks on hand with chic drink dispensers. This Square Beverage Dispenser done in clear glass from Horchow brings a clean and contemporary look to display your drink of choice: fresh lemonade, juice or sangria for the adults. I love the separate storage area at the base, which can be used for practical purposes (like fruit) or decorative items (like flowers or seashells). On the beach or on the front porch, you and your guests will certainly enjoy refilling your glasses. Beverage dispensers pair well with these other entertaining essentials.
No need to bring the party indoors after the sun goes down; string lights from Restoration Hardware will illuminate the festivities. In addition to creating a romantic atmosphere, outdoor lights will also help to navigate any guests who might be unfamiliar with your property.
These accents will help you say goodbye to the dreary beige and gray of winter and say hello to bright hues that get you in the mood for enjoying warm summer days and nights.
