ImproveNet prides itself on its role as an independent service helping
both homeowners and remodeling professionals meet and complete projects
together. We have found a straightforward way to run our business.
Most homeowners never pay anything for ImproveNet's services. Our core
contractor matching services are free to homeowners, and ImproveNet's
premium background check and contract review services cost only a nominal
fee of $29 to $50 each. Home plans and other products also are available
for purchase at reasonable costs
Our business revenue comes from two main sources: contractors and design
professionals, and advertising fees.
We admit only the best professionals into our network.
All the contractors, designers, and architects in our network must pass
our rigorous quality screens, establishing to our satisfaction that their
business has operated professionally, with a clean credit history and a
spotless legal record, for three or more years. We favor professionals who
also have proved to us that they maintain substantial general liability
insurance and come with strong professional and customer recommendations.

We collect lots of small lead fees and win fees.
As homeowners submit projects to us, we send descriptions of their projects
out to qualified professionals in their localities. The first four pros
who respond and request a chance to meet the homeowner are charged a small
lead fee and then given the contact information. If one of these professionals
ultimately wins his or her bid to do the project, we charge that professional
a win fee that is a small percentage of the job contract amount.

We sell advertising but maintain editorial integrity.
As you may see at the top of this page, advertising is another source
of revenue that helps support ImproveNet's mission. Companies can pay to
place banner ads on our site or to be featured in our Brochure
Showcase. They may also pay to send targeted product messages to contractors,
architects, and designers. There is no charge for products to be included
in our Product Showcase or for companies
to be mentioned in articles. ImproveNet's editors maintain control of content
selection in those areas. Our editors decide what images and articles to
include based on what they anticipate will be most useful and interesting
to remodeling homeowners.
