2018 Summer Trends

When you think of summer, you might picture light and airy home décor with bright colors. This generally stays true each year. But colors, textures and patterns can change every year. Often, you can blend trends together in one piece. Incorporate these trends in smaller items in your room rather than large pieces of furniture.

“Throw pillows are a great way to incorporate seasonal color trends and texture,” Ashley Dudich said, home blogger and shop owner at All The Design. “The gold trend can be found on so many accent pieces, even items that can be used every day! Pick-up a few coffee mugs with gold handles or trim, add a bright colored candle jar with a gold lid to your dining or coffee table, or update a photo collage with slender gold frames and big white mats. You can also try painting an accent piece of furniture or the back of a door in a fun color. This is a fairly inexpensive way to give something an updated and fresh look.”

Here's what’s trending this summer:

  • Bold Gelato Colors
  • Macramé Wall Hangings
  • Gold Accents
  • Green Houseplants
  • Terrazzo Patterns
  • Tropical Wall Art
  • Tassels

1. Bold Gelato Colors

One of the first things that come to mind when I think of summer is ice cream. So, it’s no surprise that gelato colors are trending this summer.

“Bright and creamy colors also seem to be on the scene this summer,” Dudich said. “I've seen them described as ice cream or gelato colors. Perfect for summer.”

Colors like bubblegum pink, lime green and bright lavender are popular with accessories this season. Try exchanging throw pillow covers for something a little bolder to help heat up the summer.

2. Macramé Wall Hangings

This is a trend that has been gaining popularity for the last year, but it seems to really stand out during the summer. Macramé wall hangings are a beautiful way to add another element to your wall décor. Once popular in the 1970s, it’s now making a comeback that’s gaining momentum.

“I see a lot of Macrame in homes currently,” Dudich said. “The woven designs you'll find on pillows, wall hangings, throw blankets and beyond bring a lot of interest and texture to a space. You can find these designs in a variety of colors and designs, though lighter and more neutral colors seem to be extra popular.”

3. Gold Accents

Earlier this year, I reported that metallics were back but this summer, gold is really taking center stage in a big way.

“I've noticed quite a bit of gold in this season's décor,” Dudich said. “I've started to incorporate small pops of gold in slender frames, candle holders and even cabinet and drawer pulls!”

From table legs to kitchen cabinet hardware, homeowners are using gold to reflect the summer sunshine in their homes. Shiny gold can be added to any room by simply swapping a few outdated pieces for gold.

4. Houseplants

Houseplants are a great way to add texture and color to your home. This summer, greenery is a must have item for your living room. It’s a way to bring the outdoors inside all year long. Don’t forget to pair this with a beautiful wooden mid-century modern looking plant stand. Here are a few popular houseplants to get for your room:

  • Areca Palm
  • Calanthes
  • Sword Fern
  • Marantaceae
  • King Anthurium
  • Aspidistra Elatior

Terrazzo Pattern

5. Terrazzo Patterns

Generally used in tile flooring, this pattern has now inspired the look of textiles and wall décor. Often, it can include various colors to mimic the recycled stone in the tile flooring. Now it adds pops of color to a neutral background. Bedding, throw pillows and blankets are popular items you’ll see with this pattern during the summer time. It’s a great way to add color to your space without making it overwhelming for you or your guests.

Tropical Prints

6. Tropical Wall Art

Does the summer weather have you daydreaming of being on a tropical beach? You can bring those beach vibes to your home with tropical wall art. Pineapples, monstera leaves and brightly colored birds are popular features in the must-have wall décor of the season. Using printables in beautiful decorative frames is one of my favorite ways to easily change my look for the seasons. Fall 2018 Trends

Now, you may be already thinking about the season ahead. Fall is generally decorated with warm reds, oranges and yellows to bring a sense of coziness into the home. Thankfully, some of your décor pieces, such as macrame or gold accents, will fit right into this style. Dudich said she sees these trends.

“I think all of these trends can easily carry over into other seasons with a few small decor tweaks,” she said. “I do see the gold trend becoming more and more popular. I'm seeing it in lighting, furniture, and bathroom and kitchen fixtures. I predict continued pops of color for the fall, though obviously in darker, richer tones.”

Conclusion

Spice up your summer with a few of these 2018 trends. Keep in mind, these décor items don’t have to just be for summertime; you can transition them into fall. Keep an eye out for our fall 2018 trends to see how you can incorporate the latest into your home.
