How Much Do Energy Efficient Heat Pumps Cost?

Heat pumps have a list of pros and cons just like any other heating system. One major advantage is that heat pumps are among the most efficient ways to heat a home. This results in lower energy bills for most people. Continue reading to see all the advantages and costs that come with heat pumps.

The Costs

  • Average Maximum Cost: $10,000
  • Average Minimum Cost: $3,800
  • Average Range: $6,500 - $8,300

Heat pumps are among the most energy efficient of heating options. Costs for installation vary due to factors such as the type of pump and size of the home.

The base costs of heat pumps for purchase and installation are only the beginning of determining the true cost of a heat pump. The main reason is that the efficiency of a heat pump as a heating system depends on a few factors. Location is a big factor, as those who live in warm climates will benefit most from a heat pump. Unlike other heating systems, heat pumps draw in the outside air to warm a house. If the air outside contains heat, then the energy required to do this is very low. On the other hand, if the climate often includes temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the energy needed to heat the house goes up. In this case, savings from a heat pump system could be very little. It is important to consider these types of operational costs while looking at estimates for a heat pump system. Energy-efficient heat pumps may qualify for significant federal tax credits to offset installation costs.

Materials

The two main types of heat pumps are geothermal and air source. Geothermal heat pumps draw in air from the ground while air source heat pumps draw air from the outside. Geothermal heat pumps are regarded as more efficient and reliable, and subsequently their price is higher. Air source heat pumps can be as much as half the price of geothermal pumps. For both styles, price is dependent on the brand of heat pump, how energy efficient it is and the size and location of the house it is to be installed in. Popular and highly rated brands of heat pumps include Trane, Carrier, Amana and Goodman.

Advantages and Disadvantages

A key advantage is that heat pumps do not dry the air like furnaces, and they are quieter than furnaces due to the compressor being outside. Because heat pumps draw in air from outside or the ground, they cost less to operate than systems using some type of fuel. Heat pumps can also double as cooling systems.

The primary disadvantages to a heat pump system are the initial cost and the fact that a backup system might be necessary for areas that are consistently below freezing in the winter. Heat pumps cannot function in below-freezing temperatures, which means another source of heat needs to be present. Heat pumps are not as efficient as central air conditioning when doubling as a cooling system.
